Underwater Signatures (Electromagnetic): Seabasing Logistics and Amphibious Craft

This work supports the Navy’s interest in advanced sea platform performance science and technology (S&T), advanced sea platform survivability S&T, submarine S&T and seabasing S&T.

  • Underwater electromagnetics discovery and invention (D&I):
    • Emphasis on reliable prediction of ship and submarine underwater electromagnetic (EM) signatures
    • Development of prediction methods combining computational with experimental data incorporating both hysteretic, permanent magnetization models and electrochemical surface models
    • Improved, low-cost, underwater electromagnetic signature measurement techniques based on small UUVs rather than large-fixed range

Research Concentration Areas

  • Underwater Signatures: Future ship and submarine survivability require accurate EM signature prediction. D&I work will lead to greatly improved tools and methods to understand, measure and model these signatures.

Research Challenges and Opportunities

  • Underwater Signatures:
    • S&T investments to ensure reliable, real-time knowledge and management of underwater electromagnetic signatures
    • Reduce risk with respect to meeting signature requirements through a combination of physical-scale models (magnetic and electrolytic) and computational, physics-based models
    • Reduce the number of electromagnetic sensors required to monitor and self-assess electromagnetic signatures
