Brigadier General Kyle B. Ellison

Vice Chief of Naval Research

BGen Ellison was commissioned on 26 May 1993. Upon graduation from Infantry Officer’s Course, he was assigned to Second Battalion, Sixth Marines, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina where he served as a Rifle Platoon Commander, Weapons Platoon Commander, 81mm Mortar Platoon Commander and Weapons Company Executive Officer. His deployments included Operation Sea Signal in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba and a deployment to the Mediterranean with the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit (Special Operations Capable). He was transferred to Marine Barracks Washington, D.C. in February, 1997 where he served as a Platoon Commander, Company Commander, and as the Operations Officer. In August, 2000, he attended the Amphibious Warfare School in Quantico, Virginia.

In May 2001, BGen Ellison reported to First Battalion, Seventh Marines as Headquarters and Service Company Commander. As the Weapons Company Commander, he deployed to Okinawa, Japan as part of the Unit Deployment Program and to Iraq in support of Operations Iraqi Freedom (OIF). During his tour in Iraq, he assumed the duty of Battalion Operations Officer. In January 2004, he was assigned as the Current Operations Officer, Regimental Combat Team Seven and deployed to Iraq in support of OIF II.

BGen Ellison reported to Marine Corps University in July, 2004 and was assigned as a Faculty Advisor, Expeditionary Warfare School. He was later assigned as the Section Head, Curriculum Development Section. Upon completion of the Marine Corps Command and Staff College Distance Education Program, he attended the School of Advanced Warfighting.

In July 2008, BGen Ellison reported to First Marine Expeditionary Force (I MEF), Camp Pendleton, California. He deployed in support of OIF, where he was assigned as a planner and Deputy Future Operations Officer, I MEF (FWD). He assumed command of Second Battalion, Sixth Marines in June, 2009 and deployed to Marjah, Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Upon completion of Command he attended the National War College and was later assigned as the Senior Aide De Camp to the 35th Commandant of the Marine Corps. Upon leaving the Office of the Commandant, he was assigned to the J-5, Middle East Directorate, on the Joint Staff. He then served as the Deputy Executive Assistant to the Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Upon completion of his tour with the Joint Staff, he was assigned as the Director, Marine Senate Liaison Office. After duties in the Senate, he commanded the 7th Marine Regiment and participated in operations along the SW Border with SPMAGTF-7. From July 2020 to June 2022, he served as the Commanding General, 3d Marine Expeditionary Brigade and Deputy Commanding General, III MEF prior to assuming his current assignment as the Commanding General of the Marine Corps Warfighting Laboratory / Futures Directorate and the Vice Chief of Naval Research.

BGen Ellison holds a BA in Criminal Justice from the Pennsylvania State University, an MA in Operational Studies from the Marine Corps University, and an MS in National Security Strategy from the National War College.
